Fashion Revolution Week + Fair Trade Fashion
This week in 2013 the deadliest disaster in the history of garment history happened. The Rana Plaza (a factory complex of garment workers) in Bangladesh collapsed killing over 1,100 workers and wounding over 2,200 more. The incident represents the fashion industry’s disregard for the rights and welfare of the workers and left consumers all over the world asking the question, “Who made my clothes?” Eyes open to the real price of fast fashion.
Every time I step into a Target for something specific but am wooed by the fashion aisle, I’m extra thoughtful about asking myself if I really need the new top. Because at the price point, I know the person who made it is most likely not receiving a living wage. It’s why I no longer step foot in a Zara. (Their stuff is WAY too cute and at the price point, it is near impossible to say no!!) Guide to an Ethical Closet
The bottom pillar of the buyers' hierarchy of needs is to use what you have. One way that helps me "shop my closet" is rotating my clothes from warmer to colder months. A couple of weeks ago, I brought out my spring and summer clothing, and feel like I just went shopping. Bringing out items that I haven't seen in months gets me excited to go to my closet. Which ultimately helps with my impulsive purchases.
One habit I've gotten into to help me make my way thru this pyramid is to write down when I'm tempted to buy something. I have a document in Notion that has how much it costs and how it will benefit my life. It literally makes me pause before bringing something new into my home, into my closet.
Once I'm convinced I want the pair of shoes (typically) or shirt or pants, I'll do my very best to buy from an ethical company.
Here are some of my favorite fair trade, ethical or sustainable brands.
Ethical Brands
Able
My go-to for the best fair trade shoes. Their denim is great, too.
Girlfriend Collective
Workout clothes made entirely out of recycled plastic bottles.
Pact
These supersoft basics are long-lasting and 100% fair trade and affordable.
Noonday
Of course, my ultimate go-to is fair trade accessories. They help me keep my closet smaller and still change things up day-to-day.
